Chemical peels help to smooth out fine lines, improve discoloration and exfoliate the skin. This results in smoother, healthier-looking skin. After one peel you will notice an improvement in your skin’s texture and tone, lessening of fine lines, and a refreshed appearance. Dramatic results may be achieved with a series of peels.
There are specific instructions you will need to follow before and after a chemical peel. These important tips and information will be discussed with you at your free consultation prior to your procedure. To schedule a consultation or chemical peel please call GlowMD Laser MedSpa at (540)-371-9098.

TCA is a non-toxic chemical (trichloracetic acid), which has been used to perform skin peels for over 20 years. It is a relative of vinegar (acetic acid.) When TCA is applied to the skin, it causes the top layers of cells to dry up and peel off over a period of several days to one week. When the old skin is peeled off, it exposes a new layer of undamaged skin, which has a smoother texture and more even color.
Some dermatologists, in fact, still prefer TCA peels for treating sun damage or melasma, usually in combination with prescription creams. TCA peels are safe in the hands of an experienced dermatologist. TCA peels may be a good option, particularly if you have melasma, because many lasers are difficult to use when treating melasma.
TCA peels are most commonly used:
A Jessner peel is a popular medium-depth chemical peel that works to improve skin health by helping remove and heal skin damage that is more extensive than regular “wear and tear.” A Jessner peel is comprised of three primary ingredients. These ingredients work together to exfoliate the outer layers of skin by breaking up dead skin cells. This treatment encourages the natural peeling to start several days after the chemical treatment. In the office, your skin is thoroughly cleansed and then the peel chemicals are applied. As a general rule, 2-5 coats are applied for the best possible results. Typically, a lightweight moisturizer or a calming mask is applied to the skin at the end of the treatment and you can go about the rest of your day.
Glycolic peels are simply a chemical peel that features glycolic acid as the main component.
Glycolic acid is currently a popular treatment for winkles and acne. Part of the alpha hydroxyl family of natural ingredients, glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane and is a fruit acid. When applied to the skin, it helps to remove the “glue” that holds the older, rougher and dryer skin on the surface. When it removes that top layer of skin, the fresh, new layer is visible. It’s this layer that’s without damage and which looks fresher.
People who have glycolic peels are often amazed with the results – they look younger, with fewer fine lines and wrinkles and if they have acne, they often notice their skin is quite a bit less oily and is much clearer.
It’s common to seek outside help when your skin becomes older and shows fine lines and wrinkles. That outside help can come in the form of a chemical peel and one of the most popular is a salicylic acid peel, which provides many of the same benefits as other chemical peels, but is often gentler to the skin.
When used a chemical peel, salicylic acid is successful at reducing fine lines and wrinkles and diminishing the look of whiteheads and blackheads and is helpful at making the skin look more toned and even.
When you have a salicylic acid peel done in an office, a peel is placed on your skin and left for 10 to 20 minutes. After the peel has been on your face for those 10 to 20 minutes, it will be removed. Most people suffer no discomfort like what they might encounter with a glycolic acid peel. It’s possible to have some slight irritation or redness, but it’s usually quite minor and clears up quickly.
It’s important to know that just one session of a salicylic acid peel isn’t usually enough. It’s ideal to get more than one – most doctors and aestheticians will recommend a series of 6 to 10 sessions to get the best benefit.
