Dermaplaning Pro – The Pro’s & Con’s

dermaplane pro logo

One of the trendiest hair-removal options today is dermaplaning, which is performed using a scalpel to manually exfoliate dead skin cells from the face. “Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation method that requires the use of a sterile surgical scalpel to gently shave the top layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, dead skin layer, and vellus hair, aka peach fuzz,”. This treatment results in ultra-smooth, fresh, and brighter skin. By removing that dead layer and hair from the face, the skin is evened out, and it helps with cell metabolism, which helps new skin come to the surface.” But is dermaplaning just a passing trend? Or is it a treatment worth investing in? Here are some pros and cons:

PROS:

  • It painlessly exfoliates the stratum corneum to stimulate cellular turnover with little to no downtime.
  • It is a great option for clients with sensitive skin and pregnant women who are looking for a deep exfoliation.
  • It can be performed prior to treatments like facials, laser, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels for better product penetration.
  • It can be performed frequently.
  • It helps makeup go on smoother and more evenly.
  • It can help significantly lighten postinflammatory scars from past acne.
  • It does not make the hair grow back thicker and darker.

CONS:

  • The results might not be as long-lasting as other hair-removal methods, such as waxing, as the hair is not removed from the root, but a much better experience. Laser hair removal does not smooth out skin or reduce light hair. Dermaplaning does both!
  • Results will differ depending on a client’s individual hair-growth cycle.
  • Not everyone is a candidate. Clients with active and cystic acne should avoid this type of hair removal, as it can cause further irritation. Also, it is contraindicated for clients with hirsutism, a condition of excessive male-pattern hair growth in women.

Vi Peel Experience the Beauty of Peeling

For All Skin Types! …..The VI Peel is a relatively new treatment that employs a combination of TCA, Salicylic, Retin-a, Phenol, and Vitamin C for the achievement of optimal results for all skin types and color. It is a treatment designed for anti-aging and to clear acne skin conditions in both adults and teens and improve the skin’s tone and texture by reducing age spots, freckles, and uneven hyperpigmentation, including melasma. Chemical peel treatments remove the outer, “dead” layers of the skin or epidermis. This allows the epidermis to become more permeable to nutrients. In addition, peels help reduce fine lines, smooth the skin, reduce the appearance of scars, and give a softer, suppler appearance to skin.

The Vi Peel has been safely used to manage acne in patients as young as 13 years of age and is effective for use on darker skin tones that have not historically responded well to other chemical peel procedures. With new innovations such as the ViPeel, for the first time African-American and darker skin types such as some Asian and Latin skins can all benefit from the anti-aging and restorative skin care that was not previously available.

The Vi Peel tackles skin problems at the cellular level rather than just burning skin off. We now understand what a chemical peel in general does, but the question is what makes a Vi Peel any different? The Vi Peel has many acids and vitamins work together to erase fine lines and wrinkles, minimize enlarged pores, and build collagen and elastin to tighten the skin. It is extremely effective in practically eliminating hyper pigmentation including melasma, the most difficult pigmentation issue to address. The Vi Peel also provides excellent results for acne and acne scarring.

The application process can take up to 30 minutes and involves the chemical solution being topically applied to the skin. The peel is then left on the skin for six hours and washed off by the patient at home, or you may sleep with it on overnight. Some patients experience light stinging during application, which subsides quickly.

The VI Peel is virtually painless and requires no skin preparation and little downtime. The Vi Peel also works well in conjunction with lasers and injectable as well to achieve an overall improvement if desired!

Large Pores?? How To Help Shrink Them!

We all want satiny smooth skin, unfortunately big pores often stand in the way of having that. Here is Glow MD’s Tips on minimizing the appearance of large pores.

There are a number of factors that will cause large pores, but of the many, there are three main culprits. As we age we will naturally lose the elasticity in the surrounding skin that supports the pores, causing pores to appear bigger than they actually are. Secondly, men are more likely to have larger pores compared to women from their genetic makeup and increased oil production. And last but not least, our body uses a substance called Sebum, which naturally hydrates our skin to prevent from drying. This substance however is very oily and individuals who produce more than average will find that oily skin causes larger pores no matter what your age or gender.

The good news is you can make your large pores appear smaller and here’s some quick how-to’s:

  1. Cleanse:

One of the easiest and quickest ways to reduce large pores is implementing a daily routine of constantly keeping them clean. Use a mild cleanser twice a day and exfoliate so that your skin doesn’t become overly dry.  You can consider a cleanser that contains a lactic or salicylic acid to declog the pores.

  1. Exfoliate:

Removing dead skin cells from the upper skin layer to brighten skin texture and get rid of heaped up cells surrounding and in the pores.  Removing the dull layer of dead skin cells on top of your living skin layer gives you brighter, smoother, more radiant looking skin with a velvety soft texture.  You may want to think about invest in a dermasweep, medical facials, or peels to clean down into your pores. Oil and clogged pore debris can then be lifted out of the pores.  Empty pores look cleaner and smaller because the black appearance oxidized pore debris make pores look more obvious.

  1. Treat:

The use of topical treatments such as retinoids, salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acid or benzoyl peroxides will not only reduce the size of the pores but will also aid in the destruction of bacteria that cause acne and treat sun damage.

If you still feel like your pores look big with the suggestions mentioned above, you may need a little extra help. There are many dermatological advances in skincare which has led to the development of a number of effective treatments for large pores. If you have large pores, you may benefit from the following treatments:

  1. Chemical Peels:

Our team at GlowMD will work with you to transform your complexion into beautiful, healthy-looking skin. Our chemical peels use varying types of prescription-strength acids including salicylic, lactic, retinol, and trichloroacetic acid to remove your outer layers of dead skin – revealing the fresher, healthier, softer skin underneath.

  1. Non Ablative Skin Resurfacing Services such as Microneedling or Fractora Radio Frequency

Non-Ablative Laser Skin Resurfacing works beautifully to create micro-zones of collagen boosting to reveal fresher, smooth skin.  It can minimize the appearance of pores as well as acne scars.  Downtime is minimal with some mild redness and flaking.  Typically a series of even 2 to 3 treatments is enough for long-lasting results.

  1. IPL Photofacial:

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments are also fantastic for refining the texture and appearance of pores.  Skin feels incredible after even a single treatment.  IPL causes tightening of the pores, gives the skin an overall glow, and addresses any unwanted brown spots.

    7. Wear Sunscreen

Too much sun can make your skin less supple, making your pores look bigger. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. Also, wear a broad-brimmed hat and avoid being out in the sun

IPL Phototherapy for Summer Sun Damage

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology uses a broad spectrum of light to delicately target and reduce melanin, excess pigment in the skin. This is definitely one of the best treatments for post-summer skin.

Skin’s pigment is gently heated by short pulses of light energy from the IPL hand piece. The temperature in these highly-concentrated areas of melanin or vascular pigment is raised, shattering the cells that contain excess pigment. The body then begins its natural process of repairing the injured cells, reducing the pigment, and replacing this area with new, younger skin cells.*

Skin conditions treated with IPL Phototherapy include:

  • Age Spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Brown Spots
  • Freckles
  • Pigmented Lesions
  • Sun Damage
  • Sun Spots

During your IPL consultation, you will meet with one of the medical staff who is certified and specializes in IPL Treatments. She will discuss any concerns and customize a treatment plan for you.

Skin Resurfacing with Chemical Peels, Microdermabrasion, and Laser

After the summer you may be left with more sun-damaged skin, age-spots, and wrinkles. In addition, you may have skin scarred by acne, accidents or previous surgery can benefit from skin resurfacing. There are three major treatment methods available for skin resurfacing.

Chemical peels, ViPeels, uses chemical reactive solutions to remove the undesirable layer of skin. A chemical peel sounds like a harsh treatment, but in reality it can greatly vary from gentle to strong depending on the type of solution used for your skin’s needs. For all skin types!!

Dermasweep uses a rotating brush on your skin, removing the uneven outer layer of the skin, unclogging your pores, and improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles through collagen stimulation. After the treatment is completed, we infuse the skin with a Vitamin C, maybe a Hyaluronic acid for the dewy fresh look, or even for hyperpigmentation.
